PANAX GINSENGThe most widely used Chinese medicinal plant, it's said to boost energy and strengthen the immune system. Panax is from the Latin, panacea, meaning cure-all, and this herb has long been considered the best general tonic. Known as the ''True Ginseng", it grows in China or Korea. American ginseng is in the same family, but not nearly as strong. Siberian ginseng is remotely related, having very different properties. The root of the plant contains the active ingredients, ginsenosides. Ginseng supplements are sold in the form of tinctures, teas, or capsules. Capsules are the most potent because they contain the powdered root in its purest form. A good ginseng product should contain 4 to 7% ginsenosides. Research suggests that the herb normalizes blood sugar and stimulates circulation. There are some claims that it's the only true aphrodisiac. Most people feel an energy boost from it immediately, but it can be more gradual. This is an over-all feeling of increased vigor without the nervousness caused by caffeine. Because it can stimulate circulation, it can also increase blood pressure, so this is not an herb to take if that's a concern. People take anywhere from 200 to 2,000 milligrams a day, usually without any known adverse effects. It's recommended to take this in divided doses two to three times a day on an empty stomach. Shop carefully for this product. Make sure to get only panax from Asia, containing just the root, and no other parts of the plant. There are a lot of adulterated and overpriced products on the shelf. A reasonable price to pay for a good ginseng supplement is $15 to $20 for 250 capsules of 520 milligram strength. For more information :
